In Memoriam

Winter is always a tough season at BaaHaus. Despite our best efforts, some of the more at-risk residents have an especially difficult time. In other cases, nature takes its course, sometimes much to our shock.

We are very sad to announce that Cathy Cow was euthanized in November 2003. This was an especially hard call for us, although we knew from the moment we met her a year ago that a humane death was in her immediate future. Cow eyelid cancer cannot be cured, but it can be slowed. She (and we) did the best we all could do to keep her comfortable but when the cancer really started advancing in the late Fall, we made this hardest of decisions. We are glad that so many of you were able to meet Cathy at the Open House, and we thank her several sponsors for their support. Cathy was about 24 years old.

Phoebe the rabbit died in late January of a persistent infection stemming from her eye surgery back in October. Despite weeks of hand feeding and special medications, we lost this battle. Phoebe was a delightful black on white bunny who had been abandonned (in her cage) beside an apartment house dumpster. She, too, had several dedicated sponsors. She was only about three years old.

Another great favorite at BaaHaus, and perhaps our most fragile resident, died in February. Eiko the tiny rabbit, who was something of a medical miracle given his many handicaps, was proof that courage can come in the smallest package---in his case under 2 pounds. Eiko was approximately 4 years old. He had several adoring sponsors to whom we are grateful.
