.We love the sheep! They are
the gentlest of creatures. You have already
read about Albertine and Giberte in "Saved
from Starvation." But you should
get to know Michelle and Wallace, too. Michelle was shot in the woods
by
yahoos who were "hunting"
from the back of their pickup truck, in between
guzzling beer and tossing bottles. Ironically, a bow hunter found Michelle,
stunned and in shock, and CARRIED HER a half mile back to his van. He
then drove to a feed store on the island and the staff called us. Michelle
had been hit in the head by a spent bullet and had a huge goose egg but
no
entry wound. She was very frightened, but has gradually regained trust
and
enjoys a handful of grain. We were never able to find out how she had
ended
up in the woods, miles from any sheep pastures.
Wallace was rescued by his
neighbor who had become quite attached to him
over the course of her daily walks. One day she noticed a sign "Lamb
for
sale" and inquired if the little lamb was for sale. "Yes, and
only 59 cents a
pound." Oh no, the
neighbor couldn't stand the thought of Wallace ending up
as a bunch of little white packages, so she asked us to take him. She
purchased him for $50 and he has been at BaaHaus ever since. He is the
self-appointed ambassador of the refuge, friendly and outgoing, if a little
on the pushy side...no small thing when you are as big as Wallace!
