Well, some surrenders work out well at BaaHaus; some are more difficult. Ruby and Hazel fall into the latter category. A Vashon woman called, hoping we would take her two pigs. The girls had been checked by a veterinarian quite recently who could not find anything wrong with them except that they were rather thin. We picked up Ruby and Hazel and deposited them in the piggery. All heck broke out; instead of the nine established pigs taking charge (which is what usually happens), they were completely routed by these two VERY aggressive gals. Fights broke out, blood flowed, screams rang through the neighborhood. Good grief! What were we in for now?!

Things have settled down somewhat in the intervening 10 months. Turns out that Hazel and Ruby, while very well cared for, simply never got enough to eat. Their previous caregiver just didn't have enough information on what these gals required in the way of calories. The pigs have both gained 50 to 75 pounds, are definitely NOT potbelly pigs, and while still on the pushy side, have decided that the other little pigs are not all that bad after all, as long as they "keep their place." A delicate truce remains in effect, but we are making plans to build a separate residence for R&H, which will be a huge relief to the little guys.
