But because Smokey would not sing after this terrible experience, his owner wanted to get rid of him.

"What can you do with a canary that won't sing?" she asked.

Keep him forever safe and sound at BaaHaus!

And, late in the afternoon on the day that Smokey came
to BaaHaus, with
sun streaming in the living room window,
I looked at Smokey and asked if he would like to listen
to some Mahler.

We put on the gorgeous Symphony No. 7, "Song of the Night," and guess what? Yes, Smokey threw back his head and began to sing.

Smokey the canary has one of the most dramatic stories of any resident at BaaHaus.

His absent-minded former owner walked away from the kitchen stove and forgot the food that was simmering there. Before anyone realized it, the house had filled with thick black smoke. The two humans escaped, leaving their dog and Smokey behind.

Luckily, Vashon fire folk are as concerned about island animals as they are about people and property damage. Firefighters rushed in and found both animals unconscious; Smokey was lying belly up in the bottom of his cage. Undeterred, the rescuers got the animals outside, administered oxygen and revived BOTH the dog and Smokey!
