12/04/10: UW Animal Studies Class Visit

by Ruby Fung

I had so much fun on our field trip to Baahaus! Not only had I not been on a field trip since forever, it was really nice to do some learning outside of the classroom. After all we have learned from our class, it was really nice to see that there are people out there doing great things for animals. I mean, we had read about these Sanctuary farms, but it was a whole different story actually going to one, and seeing the animals. Not to mention how incredibly CUTE they all were.

Like Maria Elena said, it was interesting to see the interspecies friendships that developed on the farm.

It was interesting to hear the stories of the animals. And like I mentioned before, it was interesting to see how the animals have recovered from injury. Because of Glenda and Karen's compassion, care and hard work, these animals are able to live a much better life than before. The injuries that I saw made me think that they've been able to recover from such a low point in their life. And it was nice to know that they have overcome those hard times, and can lead a happier life now :)

I don't remember the last time I've been to the zoo, so it was really nice and it was so much fun for me to be up close and personal to the animals. I loved it. :) I also loved how Glenda pointed out how each animal had his or her own personality. It was so true. One of the llamas was much more curious towards us and would follow us around. The other llama would kind of just watch us from a distance. The sheep were curious towards us, but kept their distance, they'd also walk away when you got too close. It was so heartbreaking to hear Glenda tell us the story of the pigs. How they had been abused and hit by a 2 x 4. You could tell that a few of the pigs were friendly and curious towards us, they'd look at us, while others sat their seeming indifferent. I don't mind when these animals run away or are indifferent toward us, I don't expect them to give us hugs or anything. It just their nature, they could be afraid of us, see us as predators, or really just don't care. It's great when they do interact with me, but I understand if they don't want to.
