Meet the Ducks

BaaHaus has about sixteen ducks at the moment, including Buckley, the "wild" Mallard who thinks he should live in the house. Buckley was brought to Fair Isle
Animal Clinic mere hours after he had hatched. But the rest of his family was nowhere to be found. We picked him up from the veterinarians the next day and he's been here ever since. He can fly but he does not leave. In fact, when Mr. &
Mrs. Crosby (a truly wild pair of Mallards) show up on our pond every Spring, Buckley runs and hides behind his "Mother."

Nova, a Muscovy cross, this duck likes to sit in your lap and chat. Buckley, the wild mallard who amazes all who meet him.

Gene
Petra
This guy is some sort of interesting cross. He came to us, along with the Rouens Huey, Dewey and Louie, when the landlord told his tenants, "Those ducks have to go." It seems that the ducks were utilizing a very large double pond with year-round stream (how unusual, right!??!) and that it was summer and the water level "might" drop. The ponds are located in the middle of a large chunk of Vashon acreage, but when you are the tenant and want to stay, it's hard to argue with the landlord. So these four caballeros came to BaaHaus. They now share a front pasture with sheep, geese and two other ducks, Joseph and Glen. Can anyone out there identify this duck? Petra's personality is in direct disproportion to her tiny size. Wow, does she have self confidence. She could teach a course. We do not know her entire story, but it must be big, very big.

Petra came to BaaHaus, along with her very good friend Nova the Muscovy, from a well intentioned person who found herself absolutely overwhelmed by the animals she had acquired. After lengthy negotiations with this individual, she finally decided to surrender these gals to BaaHaus. And as an afterthought, tossed in Lily, the gorgeous Cockatoo shown on the Meet the Birds page. So this was a good lesson for us; although we are a FARM animal sanctuary, you never quite know who might come along as companions to the barnyard folks.
