Summer is enjoying a big snuggle with Kim Le Maire, a new, very hardworking volunteer at BaaHaus. | ||||||
Summer
the rabbit is informally known as "the $5.00 rabbit." The story
is hard to believe, but this is how we got Summer. A woman called BaaHaus
in November 2003 to ask if we would please take a rabbit that HAD to be
removed from her current home in Portland. Okay, so what's the reason, we
asked.
Well, the rabbit belonged to a ten year old girl who had taken care of Summer for 6 years, but the child's mother decided that the rabbit was not being cared for properly and, in order to teach the little girl and her even younger sister a "good" lesson, the mother was going to kill the rabbit in front of the kids. "No, no!" said the Dad and new stepmother, "this is NOT a lesson we want the girls to learn!" But no pleading would change the woman's mind. Then, a mutual friend got involved, called the mother and offered to just buy the rabbit for $5.00. "Okay," said the mom. The kids, Dad, Stepmom and friend all brought Summer to BaaHaus. End of lesson. But not quite. We took Summer to our veterinarian for a checkup. The doctor pronounced her in very good health, certainly not neglected, very friendly and personable. She is gorgeous as you can see from the picture. |
